Gas leaks in Melbourne
If you smell gas, safety comes first and the gas distributor is the first call, not a plumber. Follow these steps now.
Energy Safe Victoria
If you smell gas
These are Energy Safe Victoria's own steps. If there is a fire or an emergency, call Triple Zero immediately.
Turn off the gas
At the meter, or at the tank or cylinder, only if safe to do so.
No flames, no switches
Put out all flames and do not smoke or strike matches. Do not operate electrical switches or devices.
Open up and clear the area
If you are inside, open doors and windows. Keep people away from the affected area.
Call the distributor
Call the emergency number on your gas bill: Multinet Gas 132 691, Australian Gas Networks 1800 427 532, AusNet Services 13 67 07. For bottled gas, the supplier's emergency contact.

How it works
From the first message to a plumber on site
One message or call, and the job goes to the plumbing company that does it.
Tell us what has gone wrong
What is blocked, burst or leaking, where it is, and whether water or sewage is still running.
The job goes to Plumb & Co
Your details go straight to Plumb & Co, a Melbourne plumbing company, and they arrange a plumber to come out.
The cause is found first
Whose pipe it is, yours or the water corporation's, is worked out before anything else, with a camera where the cause is hidden.
A price before the work
Nothing is started until you have the price for the job and have said yes to it.
After it is safe
Gas leaks inside the property
Who fixes the leak once the area is safe?
The distributor looks after the meter and the street side. A leaking pipe, fitting or appliance inside the property is a gasfitter's job. Plumb & Co's founder is a licensed gasfitter.
Do I need a compliance certificate?
Gas work is the kind that needs one: installing, moving or changing gas piping or a gas appliance. The licensed gasfitter who does the work issues it.
Where should I make the calls from?
Make the calls from outside, well away from the smell, and leave every light and appliance as it is until the leak has been made safe.
