A basin town on drained marsh
Bacchus Marsh steadily grew during the 1970s, and growth has quickened since as the town spread north to Darley and south to Maddingley. Newer streets are likely on PVC sewers, while the original town centre may still have earthenware or cast iron, where roots at the joints are the usual failure.
The marshiness needed draining in places, as part of Bacchus Marsh is lower than the Werribee plains to the south. On that low ground stormwater has little fall, so a blocked drain is likely to pond around the house, and wet soil makes a trench slow to dig and reinstate.
The town sits in a basin, and the junctions of Parwan Creek, the Lerderderg River and the Werribee River are immediately east of the town. Properties near the rivers can sit under flood overlays, and their stormwater outlets can back up when the rivers run high.

Bacchus Marsh questions
Honour elms, flood referrals and the pump stations
Why does drain work near the honour elms need extra approval?
The Victorian Heritage Register entry for the elms says works for water, gas, sewer or similar services in the road reserve and on the land either side will require an arborist's report and approval from the Executive Director of Heritage Victoria. That adds lead time and favours relining or boring over an open trench.
Who fixes a sewer overflow from the main?
Greater Western Water, which owns the sewer mains and pump stations. Most of the town's sewage reaches the Avenue of Honour pump station, which the corporation has eased with an upgraded station feeding the recycled water plant. The house drain up to the connection stays the owner's.
Does a flood overlay change a drainage job?
It can. Under Moorabool's flood overlays, planning permit applications are referred to Melbourne Water as a determining referral authority, so works that change ground levels or build over drains on that land carry extra lead time.
Why do drains block near the town centre shops?
Street tree roots are a known problem there. Moorabool's streetscape plans for the main street include new tree plots and kerb and channel regraded to reduce tree root impacts and improve drainage, so a slow drain nearby is checked for roots with a camera first.
